With the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) compliance now in effect, the feed industry is being held to a higher standard. At Feed Products & Service Company, we're ready. In fact, we've been proactively implementing the new standards for years, and we have a well established Feed Safety Plan in effect.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration describes the FSMA as "the most sweeping reform of our food safety laws in more than 70 years." It was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011, and aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it. What to expect now that the first big FSMA compliance dates are here.
"As a company and a part of our own feed quality scheme, we've been qualifying our vendors over the last decade," says President and CEO Greg Fallin. "As we saw that need expand, we took this business from simply material handling to, in essence, being strictly a feed ingredient facility. We don't handle any other materials here other than certified feed ingredients. We feel that that's unique to this business."
Also unique to the feed industry is our ability to maintain continuous quality of care over our ingredients from their source, to their storage and processing at our facility, all the way out to our customers for delivery.
"We think that we have a facility here in Madison, Illinois, with our own people and our own equipment, that we are unique in that regard. The days of importing material, managing them through third party independent warehouses that must, by economics, handle other non-feed products, that simply isn't how we do business," Fallin says. "By being integrated through purchasing off-shore, global resourcing, and then logistically getting it here to our flagship facility in Madison, we can meet all the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act, and give our customers wholehearted assurance that they're buying from the right supplier."
We are 100% compliant with FSMA requirements. You can have peace of mind knowing that when you buy from FP&S, you are being supplied from a feed-only, company-owned, compliant facility. Please take a moment and view our short video from our president providing an overview of our progress. In addition, you will find a more detailed Feed Safety Plan here.
All of us at FP&S understand that we, like our customers and suppliers, are part of an efficient process that helps feed the world, and we take that role seriously.
